HAWKS LIFTED BY ‘PREMIUM’ BOND!

Joel de Lara Bond shot the lights out at Moreton Morrell as he dropped in 43 points to bring some Christmas spirit to Aylesford Hawks as Warwick China Red failed to get any presents. Hawks raced into a 20-6 lead and extended this to a massive 45-14 before half-time and de Lara Bond (pictured) was unstoppable, particularly in the third quarter when he slipped home three three-pointers inside a couple of minutes to down the visitors.  The games at Tile Hill 1 and Arden – again were called off with both Tamworth and Leamington failing to raise five players, but Rugby’s match with Tile Hill Trojans 2 goes ahead tonight. Team Rebels bounced back to winning ways with a victory over          Coventry Tornadoes while Nuneaton Predators, still sorting out their differences with the second team, brought forward their first team’s visit to Westwood Rhinos and walked off with maximum points. Ernesford Eagles took the six to Tile Hill Trojans 3 where they led for the opening half before Trojans took control to win and go back to second.

SCOREBOARD OPPORTUNITY FOR CLUBS AND CENTRES……

Is your club thinking of investing in a new scoreboard? If so Warwickshire Basketball have been passed the details of one supplier by our old friend Bob Hope and this model is one of several available at Sportserve, suppliers to the BBL.

Their desk-mounted board (pictured) comes in at £630 including VAT and Warwickshire Basketball members are offered a 10% discount from this making it one of the most attractive boards on the market. It also comes with an optional remote control for easier use and would be a real asset for either your club or the sports centre where you play – why not talk to them! For further information contact Andrew Evans – andy@sportserve.co.uk

HAWKS TOASTED AS FLAMES SINGE WOLVES……

Warwickshire Hawks poor run of form in the NBL Division Three continued as they were hammered 111-91 by Stoke-on-Trent Knights last weekend. They were all at sea from the off and trailed 64-32 at half-time before a recovery in the third quarter gave Coach Alex Birch some hope, but too much damage had been done and even 31 points from Curtis Hadley could not stop the rampant Knights for whom K Jones hit 52.

Hawks now travel to Birmingham Mets tomorrow (Saturday @ 2pm).

Coventry Flames took maximum points once again, this time by the narrowest of margins as they won 72-71 over University of Wolverhampton to leap-frog Hawks in the Division Three table. It was tight throughout the encounter and Flames trailed by four going into the final quarter before pulling it out of the fire. They have two games this week, starting with a trip to Sheffield tomorrow followed by a home game against unbeaten leaders Doncaster on Sunday at the Coventry Leisure Centre starting at 2.45pm.

WISE WORDS FROM HALL OF FAMER PAUL……

Hall of Famer Paul Farndon (see Warwickshire Basketball website) is still on our mailing list and has written following our recent item concerning the number of technical fouls being issued by our referees. Paul pictured) a referee of repute and now living down South reminds all participants in our great sport of the following:

  1. You are not playing for money.
  2. If you win, good for you.  If you lose then be gracious in defeat as you have lost nothing more than a game.
  3. Have you noticed the average age of officials appears to be rising each year?  Ask yourself why there are fewer replacements coming through, and are you one of those players who give the officials a hard time, but have never blown a whistle?
  4. Without referees you won’t be playing that much, and certainly not in a competitive arena.
  5. Enjoy the game, play hard but fair and, if you can, have a beer with your opponents and the referees afterwards! You’ll feel much better if you do.

Our thanks go to Paul, not only for his forty-odd years of service to Warwickshire Basketball but for his words of advice – players, coaches AND referees take note!
