The bouncing ball returns to the sports halls of Coventry & Warwickshire this week as
the new basketball season gets underway.
Division One Champions Tile Hill Trojans could not face a much tougher start as they travel to
Moreton Morrell – the new home of Aylesford Hawks and the two, who have well over forty years
of history apiece will be battling for honours and the title they have each won many times.
Pushing hard will be Arden Griffins who have won it just once and are keen to see the coveted
trophy go back to Solihull along with the Handicap Cup which they won from Trojans in last
season’s exciting finale.
But newcomers Coventry College who took the league by storm last season in Division Three were
elevated to the top flight with something to prove. They have strengthened their squad and they
could be the dark-horses, as could Warwick University who finished strongly last time out.
With only five sides in the competition – such is the high quality of Division One’s teams, they will
get to know each other well before the end of what promises to be a thrilling season at the top.
It was decided that the varying strengths of the sides in the three divisions could provide
problems for some if they were lumped together in two tables, so while the premier teams meet
at least four times, those in Division Two and Three will play three times in addition to the
handicap cup competitions.
There is also a battle for honours going on in the National League as Coventry Tornadoes and
Warwickshire Hawks are competing in Division Three and Four respectively, whilst the younger
players from the area take part in the Youth Basketball League, which is run by the West Midlands
Association. Teams from Nuneaton, Tornadoes, Hawks and Coventry’s Sky Blues in the
Community are taking part; players aged from 11-19 are lining up for the season.
Ladies basketball is growing and with Trojans making their presence felt in the Leicestershire
League, Warwickshire Basketball are organising a tournament for the ladies on 5th November.
Teams from around the region are being invited with a view to running another one after
Christmas and getting ladies’ basketball off the ground.
All in all – basketball is back, so let the action begin!
