Coventry Tornadoes seem to have developed a liking to close finishes as they chalked up their second narrow victory in a matter of days. And their unlikely hero was their player/coach Paul Adams who scored their last six points in a frantic finish at Woodlands where they defeated Team Rebels 60-56. Adams, at 6’11” has the nickname of Tall Paul and he certainly stood tall when he and his side went four points down in the final quarter of their Division Two encounter. Adrian Fonacier, who was their top scorer with 22 points then dropped in two, followed by Michael Stokes and Adams to put them ahead, but Tornadoes showed their defensive qualities as Rebels became desperate for a score. It went basket for basket to the final minute when Adams struck gold to steer Tornadoes to victory from the free-throw line.
Ernesford Eagles had their own big man Ben Clarke to thank for their win at Tile Hill Trojans 3. Clarke dominated the boards at both ends of the court as Trojans floundered and went 39-15 down by half-time before switching their defensive play and pulling things back. But the damage was already done and Eagles took the points 68-45 with Clarke leading on 16. Westwood Rhinos were too good for their hosts Nuneaton Predators 2 as Jack Ford slammed in another thirty points to make it 84 in two games, and JM Grizzlies made their first fixture a memorable one as they outsmarted Leamington Spartans 2 68-36 with Daniel Valente and Harry Addaway leading the charge.
Defence was the key to the game at Tamworth, where Trojans 1 kept the usually high-scoring Tigers to the mid-forties despite having four of their regular starters missing. Trojans also lost Farouk Bello who was involved in a collision early on and their remaining six men battled it out to win 66-46. Arden Griffins provided the fireworks once the touch-paper had been lit at Leamington Spartans 1 as they rocketed to a 100-51 victory and Aylesford Hawks welcomed Warwick china Red to their first game of the season with a convincing 64-46 win to make it three from three.
Rugby Rage got their win column moving as they came out tops 76-64 at Hereward College, where Trojans 2 were on the wrong end of a first quarter pasting. Without their two leading scorers, Trojans gave debuts to the two teenage Duckers brothers and despite leading early on, the experienced Rugby side had too many aces in their pack, none more so than fourteen-year old Callum Martin who gave a display far beyond his years to land 22 points with Guntars Trabliks on 19 as Ben Linnett replied with 20 for Trojans.
