HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

So, the festivities are over and it’s back to work and down to the real graft that comes with the second half of a Warwickshire Basketball season. The fixtures now come thick and fast starting from next Monday when Division One leaders Arden Griffins travel to Aylesford Hawks while second placed Tile Hill Trojans 1 host Leamington Spartans. Tamworth Tigers, chasing the leaders play at home to Rugby Rage with Warwick China Red entertaining Tile Hill Trojans 2.

In Division Two, unbeaten JM Grizzlies are due to travel to Nuneaton Predators 2 – hopefully back in action following their temporary voluntary suspension in December, then Grizzlies play again to make it two in three days when Team Rebels visit The Bridge. The other games next week take place at Leamington, Hereward College and Grace Academy.

Finally, as we start up again, please do not forget to send in any pictures you might have from your matches so we can include them in THE BEAR FACTS and our weekly Press Release which is supported by the Coventry Telegraph.

HAWKS AND FLAMES DOWN AGAIN……

Warwickshire Hawks’ Coach Alex Birch will be looking for a change in fortune when his side comes out of hibernation next, following their three defeats in the National League Division Three before Christmas.

Hawks were beaten narrowly when they made the trip to Derby just before the break and they more than held their own in the first half before a disastrous third period saw them slip from a two-point advantage to trail 91-78. They won the final period but it was too little too late as Mark Yates led with 29 and Curtis Hadley scored 25.

They go on the road again this weekend with a fixture at Mansfield Giants.

Coventry Flames who lost out at home to Doncaster Eagles, had to face the league leaders once more the following weekend and they came very close to causing an upset before capitulating and going down 88-78.

Flames led the first but were caught and were level at 43-43 at half-time. Eagles were three up with ten minutes left but the visitors’ resistance broke and the Yorkshire side managed to keep their unbeaten record intact.

WALKING BASKETBALL TO START ON TUESDAYS….

Walking Basketball, successfully launched by Trojans in 2017 opens a new chapter this month when sessions begin on Tuesday mornings. With the support of Dec Connolly at Woodlands Academy, the sport will continue its growth with a series of one-hour programmes which will commence at 10am from 14th January and will cater for the Over 50 age group of players. It is hoped to get people “off the couch” and into some activity so the Walking Basketball will be targeting beginners or people who have not played for many a year and wish to get going again.

The cost is £4 and spaces are limited so if you know anyone who might be interested in joining up tell them to e mail for further details …… info@trojansbasketball.co.uk.
