TOP TWO TO CLASH IN CUP!

The holders of the Bob Castledine Memorial Handicap Cup versus the past winners sets the scene for Round One of the 2019-20 competition. Then add to that it’s the past winners of the Warwickshire Basketball League versus the previous winners and you could not get a better build-up to the game which takes place at Hereward College on Monday night. All the other ties take place next week too, apart from the fixture at The XCEL where Westwood have had to call off their home game with Nuneaton 1 after being denied their court for booking reasons. In this week’s fixtures JM Grizzlies were awarded the points in their game with Rhinos after the Westwood club could not field a side. Where there WAS action Nuneaton were real Predators as they stole the points in the dying minutes at Ernesford last Friday. Leamington and China Red both gained valuable victories and Tornadoes’ tale of woe continued when Eagles soared over them. Division One leaders Arden and Tile Hill 1 both had wins too and it was a good week for Leamington who did the “double” over Trojans with 2 and 3 going down to Spartans.

HAWKS DANCE WITH WOLVES AND FLAMES NET THE METS……

Warwickshire Hawks made a wretched start to their away fixture in the National League Division Three when they slipped to 13-28 at University of Birmingham, and it cost them the points as they finished on the wrong end of an 85-76 result.

Despite winning the second quarter 25-14 they could not break the Wolves’ resistance as Hawks’ scoring was once again led by Curtis Hadley who made 22 points and Austin Dickson 14.

They finally play at home tomorrow (Saturday) when they entertain Sheffield Sabres at 5pm at Moreton Morrell where they are looking to attract a good crowd.

Coventry Flames got their act in order to defeat Birmingham Mets II 91-84 with a controlled display despite being threatened in the third quarter by their visitors.

Coach Rob Eddon was delighted with the result, for his side contains nine players  who hail from the City and most of the squad are under 23. Flames had a purple patch when they took a 54-42 lead into the interval, and despite losing the third they kept their nerve to get the win. Flames travel to Dronfield Sports Centre this weekend for their game against Derbyshire Arrows U23.
